ANNOUNCEMENT: Postponing our 2020 Call for Proposals
It is with regret—but also optimism for the future—that Global HERizons will be putting a pause on this year’s Call for Proposals, until autumn 2020. We know that the world needs smart, visionary women—perhaps now more than ever. But we also recognize that those young women need to be present during this global moment, and are focusing on the wellbeing of themselves, their families and local communities. It is a lot to ask young women to envision their contribution to building a better future when the future is unclear right now, and while they are grappling with the day-to-day realities of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The most important question: “What does change feel like?”
My whole life I have wondered, “what does change look like?” This question guides my professional and academic work, but at times it has left me feeling burnt-out and over-burdened. Could I really make an impact on the big local and global issues I care about? Was I just an optimistic, but ultimately naïve young activist? It was only when standing beside my fellow community organizers and friends this past October during a rally to protest the Nova Scotia Gold Show that I realized I had been asking the wrong question. What I should have been asking is “what does change feel like?” It feels like hope, like connection, and like love. Love for each other and for the planet we share; for an alternative vision that is just, equitable and sustainable. It is about believing that another world is possible, about stepping out of our comfort zones and making the difference that may feel hard to reach at times. An update on my Global HERizons journey (from France…)
I began my global journey in 2018, moving to L’Arche in France to live and work with people different abilities, soaking in the wisdom and insight from Jean Vanier’s vision for an inclusive and loving society. My original plan was to stay for a year and then return back to New Brunswick to open an ability-inclusive teahouse in my community. While the teahouse idea certainly still remains one of the big dreams for my life, after a year at l’Arche, I strongly feel as if there is still unfinished business for me here in France at L’Arche d’Aigrefoin… And luckily I was offered a position of house leader in my house and accepted, and so have just finished my third week in this position, and plan to do this until the termination of my Visa this time next year! I live in the same house as last year with the same 8 personnes accueil, and a whole new team of strong young women from Germany and France. Read more…

Bringing the global to the local: building a wellness business on Grand Manan Island
Wise Well & Free Holistic Services’ on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick opened a year ago this month! It’s pretty incredible to reflect back on last November to now. After my global experience learning about women’s empowerment and leadership in India last summer, and taking what I learned there to open Wise Well & Free, just before launching this idea I felt very nervous wondering if this was the right decision for me, as there are always risks in starting your own business. Sometimes it’s really easy for fear to creep in, but I trusted my intuition, knowing that this is what I wanted to do at this point in my life, and knowing what I learned from my experience in India. Canadian women are changing the world for the better everyday. But for women who have grown up outside of our urban centres, it can be difficult to get access to opportunities, navigate contexts and build key relationships to translate their ambitions into global impact.
Global HERizons believes in the power of all women to change the world, and provides young women from rural Canada with the opportunity to receive a modest financial contribution to their academic or career ambitions, accompanied with expert mentorship support to help build bridges between local and global impact.
This spring we launched our 2019 Call for Proposals, seeking passionate young women from rural Canada to propose an investment in their globally-minded academic, volunteer or social enterprise project. We received many strong proposals from women in rural communities across the country, and after a rigorous selection process, Global HERizons is pleased to announce the two successful winners of this year’s competition, Stacey Haugen and Charlotte Connolly!

Calling all ambitious, creative, globally-minded women from rural Canada!
Building off our successful first year of investment in three impressive women from rural Canada, we are launching our 2019 Call for Proposals, seeking applications passionate young women from rural Canada who are seeking support for their globally-minded academic, volunteer or social enterprise project. And we want to hear from you!

By accompanying our financial support with guidance, insight and perspective from some of Canada’s successful female leaders and changemakers, we hope to provide a springboard for women who may not have the personal networks and connections to the national and global spaces, but who have the essential knowledge, skills and passion that the world needs to tackle some the most pressing issues facing the planet and its people.

A reflection after my first 10 weeks in France
After spending the six months prior to this trip curating countless aspirations for my upcoming year in France, it is with no small amount of surprise and satisfaction that I can say that all my hopes for L’Arche d’Aigrefoin have been utterly fulfilled. After finishing my English Literature and Interdisciplinary Leadership degree at the University of New Brunswick, I decided to apply to join a L’Arche community in France as a live-in assistant. I wanted to do this firstly because I was itching for an adventure, an experience that would be extremely different from my life as a student. I wanted to learn practical things, like how to cook, and clean, and help others, and how to read a metro map. I wanted to experience a lifestyle that didn’t revolve around peer-reviewed articles and studying for the next exam. I wanted to meet people who were different from me and who held views opposite to my own, and furthermore to respect them for it. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, (because no words could better describe Fredericton, New Brunswick for me), and discover how I could integrate myself into a community as a complete stranger. The Power of Silence
I graduated with my social work degree in 2017, and moved to Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick with my partner Charles. He grew up on the island and I loved being close to the ocean every day, I find it very grounding. I found I spent a lot more time enjoying nature than when I lived in the city. The only thing that was difficult when I first moved to Grand Manan was there were no opportunities on the island in my field and I was keen to work. Read more…

You are Enough
I grew up in a small town in Woodstock, New Brunswick; I lived in several cities for a while but ended up moving back to rural New Brunswick on Grand Manan Island.
Growing up in a rural area, has so many benefits but also has its challenges. One of those challenges can be connecting your dreams, aspirations and career to a global level. It’s difficult because you’re not always pushed to think big, most people in rural areas are comfortable settling for a career in their small town and that is enough for them. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that but for people who have bigger dreams, it’s sometimes difficult to find people to share this with. There seemed to be a small number of people who were open to talking about global dreams and plans in my experience. Read more…

Make your Dream a Reality
The biggest highlight of my trip was the Shoba surprise.
Shoba is a sixty-eight year old woman who was in one of my classes. She travelled every day of the week to attend class with many students who were much younger than her. Shoba lost her husband last year, her son lives with her and she works hard every day to look after him. Read more…

Live in the Present
I have always wanted to volunteer internationally, however, this desire to volunteer always conflicted with my post-secondary education. I never felt like I had the time to go because my summers were spent working to pay for the following school year.
I graduated with my Bachelor of Social Work; I moved to Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. There were no social work jobs on the island, so I created my own job and started working a part-time contract job in Charlotte County schools on a self-esteem research project. Read more…
